The EMS Council, the society's governing body, met in in Bled (Slovenia) this weekend (25-26 June 2022). Several major decisions were taken including the election of a new EMS President, Vice-President, and Treasurer, and support for a significant expansion in the range of EMS's scientific activities.
The EMS has launched a new awareness campaign on the problem of predatory publishing. For more information see this new page (link) which contains advice on identifying problematic journals and practices.
The EMS is shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden closure of the Istanbul Center for Mathematical Sciences (IMBM, link here). EMS President Volker Mehrmann has written to the Rector of Boğaziçi University, the President of the Turkish Research Council, the President of the Turkish Higher Education Council, and the President of the Turkish Republic to urge that this decision be reconsidered.

Congratulations to Noga Alon and Ehud Hrushovski, winners of the 2022 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences "for their remarkable contributions to discrete mathematics and model theory with interaction notably with algebraic geometry, topology and computer sciences." The Women in Math Committee (WiM) of the European Mathematical Society is organising a free event called "EMS/WiM Day" on Friday 20 May 2022, within the broader initiative of "May 12th", a celebration of women in Mathematics in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani.
