Our series of interviews with members of the EMS Mathematics Outreach and Engagement Committee continues. For the second issue, we now welcome Elise Raphael, who has been a Committee member since 2024. Elise is the Scientific Officer of the SwissMAP Research Station and Co-director of Genève Évasions Mathématiques (G·EM), a mathematical outreach center affiliated with the University of Geneva.

The Women in Mathematics Committee (WiM) of the European Mathematical Society is proud to announce the EMS Women in Mathematics Day 2025. This special event is organized as part of the "May 12th" initiative, a worldwide celebration of women in mathematics in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal.

The Banach Center is inviting applications for funding support for scientific events, including conferences, semesters, and forums, through its annual competition with a deadline of May 5, 2025 (for events planned during 2025–2027).

On behalf of the European mathematical community, we congratulate Andrew G. Barto and Richard S. Sutton, who have been awarded the 2024 ACM A.M. Turing Award “for developing the conceptual and algorithmic foundations of reinforcement learning.”

On 21–22 March 2025, the annual meeting of ERCOM — the EMS Committee for European Research Centres on Mathematics — was hosted by the Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP) in Paris. The event brought together directors and administrative representatives from leading research centres in mathematics across Europe.

On 28–29 March 2025, the Executive Committee of the European Mathematical Society met in Protaras, Cyprus, for one of its regular in-person meetings. The session was followed by the annual Presidents Meeting, which brought together the presidents of the EMS corporate member societies and institutions. The EMS warmly thanks the Cyprus Mathematical Society and its President, Gregory Makrides, for their generous hospitality in a beautiful and welcoming setting.

On behalf of the European mathematical community, we congratulate Masaki Kashiwara, who has been awarded the 2025 Abel Prize “for his fundamental contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory, notably the theory of D-modules and the invention of crystal bases.”

UNESCO celebrates International Day of Mathematics 2025 with a webinar on 14 March 2025. In collaboration with the International Mathematical Union and IMAGINARY, this year’s webinar will explore the theme mathematics and creativity in art and education.

EMS School on Mathematical Modelling, Numerical Analysis, and Scientific Computing 2025 The EMS School on Mathematical Modelling, Numerical Analysis, and Scientific Computing is set to take place in Kácov, Czech Republic, from June 15 to June 20, 2025.

The European Mathematical Society has appointed Professor Ann Dooms as the new Chair of the EMS Education Committee for the 2025-2028 term.
