The Women in Math Committee (WiM) of the European Mathematical Society is organising a free event called "EMS/WiM Day" on Friday 20 May 2022, within the broader initiative of "May 12th", a celebration of women in Mathematics in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani.

The EMS congratulates Dennis Parnell Sullivan, the 2022 Abel Prize Laureate “for his groundbreaking contributions to topology in its broadest sense, and in particular its algebraic, geometric and dynamical aspects”. The following is an English translation of an open letter to the President of the Russian Federation from Russian Mathematicians against the war in Ukraine. The original (reproduced further down) is hosted here (link) on the webpage of the Russian scientific publication, Troitsky Variant. Signatures from mathematicians working in Russia can be added at that link. At time of writing the number of signatures exceeds 350.

The following statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been aproved by the EMS Executive Committee, on 1st March 2022.

The Executive Board of the European Mathematical Society is deeply concerned about the Russian invasion in Ukraine and expresses its strong solidarity with the people of Ukraine and our fellow mathematicians in Ukraine. While International Mathematical Congresses (ICM) have been and always will be a way to unite the world community of mathematicians, under the current circumstances, we call on the International Mathematical Union not to proceed with the ICM in Russia in July 2022.

The Council is the EMS's governing body, comprising delegates of our corporate and individual members, and meets every two years. Its next meeting will be 25-26 June 2022 in Bled (Slovenia). For more information see this page (link).
