2.3 Standing committees and their tasks
The role of EMS committtees is to support the EMS in general in their activities. Every standing committee is associated a member of the Executive Committee (EC) as liaison officer. The liaison officer is to be invited to every committee meeting and is supposed to participate in the meeting as observer to keep up the communication with the EC. The reports of the committee and possible difficulties in the committee work are to be discussed with the liaison officer who will also represent the committee in the EC in case that the chair of the committee is not participating in the EC meeting personally. The membership of the committees of the European Mathematical Society is subject to the following rules:
- Each member serves a four-year term, with the possibility to extend the service for one more term of four years.
- Each committee chair serves a four-year term, with the possibility to extend the service for one more term of two years.
- Cases in which a member becomes a committee chair are handled individually, with the intention that no one should serve more than eight years in total in whatever role in the same committee.
- Each committee member must be an individual member of the EMS and has paid the membership fees for the years, during which committee service takes place.
