The Women in Mathematics Committee (WiM) of the European Mathematical Society is proud to announce the EMS Women in Mathematics Day 2026. This special event is organized as part of the "May 12th" initiative, a worldwide celebration of women in mathematics in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal.
In 2026, Prof. Volker Mehrmann of TU Berlin will serve as the EMS Distinguished Lecturer, giving lectures as part of this prestigious new EMS title. The Society also invites the mathematical community to begin preparing nominations for the 2027 EMS Distinguished Lecturer.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded the 2026 Abel Prize to Gerd Faltings for his groundbreaking contributions to arithmetic geometry.
