IMUS obtains «María de Maeztu» Seal of Excellence
The Institute of Research in Mathematics at the University of Seville (IMUS), has recently obtained the prestigious ‘María de Maeztu’ Seal of Excellence, awarded by the Spanish Research Agency. The selection of accredited units is carried out through a competitive process based on international standards, with the participation of scientific committees composed of internationally recognized, independent experts.

IMUS has achieved a historic milestone by being the first center with this Seal of Excellence from the University of Seville. With funding of three million euros for the next four years, IMUS will face new challenges for the advancement of research in mathematics and will continue to contribute to the training of a new generation of researchers.
Since its creation in 2007, IMUS has maintained a firm commitment to excellence in mathematical research, which has now been institutionally recognized with this Seal of Excellence. With more than 160 members and 46 active research projects, IMUS is an international reference in the field of mathematics. The scientific director of the project, Justo Puerto, and the director of IMUS, M. Ángeles Japón, will work together for its development.

8th Workshop on Design Theory, Hadamard Matrices and Applications (Hadamard 2025): 26-30 May 2025. IMUS (Sevilla, Spain) In honor of the 60-th birthday of Dane Flannery (University of Galway, Ireland) and the 65-th birthday of Robert Craigen (University of Manitoba, Canada). Hadamard 2025 is the eighth in a series of conferences, the previous seven being held at Wollongong, Australia (1993); Seville, Spain (2007); Galway, Ireland (2009); Melbourne, Australia (2011); Lethbridge, Canada (2014); Budapest, Hungary (2017); Krakow, Poland (2022). The 1993 conference, called the “Hadamard Centenary” in recognition of Hadamard’s 1893 paper, was organized by Jennifer Seberry and colleagues. The purpose of the workshop is to bring together researchers and students interested in design theory, especially as it relates to Hadamard matrices and their applications, as well as in related areas in coding theory, association schemes, sequences, finite geometry, difference sets, quantum information theory, theoretical physics and computer security. The participants would learn about the latest developments in these areas, discuss the latest findings, take stock of what remains to be done on classical problems and explore different visions for setting the direction for future work.

Workshop on PDEs and Control 2025: 3-5 September 2025. IMUS (Sevilla, Spain) The development of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) represents one of the cornerstones of research at the Department of Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis (EDAN) of the University of Seville. Over the years, the department has fostered numerous collaborations, trained many doctoral students, and established a strong network of international contacts, all aimed at advancing research in this fundamental area of mathematics. Thanks to the dedication of its members, EDAN has become a reference point in both research and education in mathematics, while also increasing its level of international engagement. These efforts have led to fruitful collaborations with esteemed researchers from countries such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, France, Mexico, the USA, Tunisia, and Senegal, promoting a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge. With this in mind, EDAN is organizing this international workshop to highlight the latest advances in the field of PDEs and Control, bringing together long-standing collaborators as well as other leading researchers active in these areas. As a special part of the workshop, we will hold a tribute session in honor of Professors Francisco Guillén González and Manuel González Burgos, on the occasion of their 60th birthdays.

The 5th Spanish Young Statisticians and Operational Researchers Meeting (SYSORM): 5-7 November 2025. IMUS (Sevilla, Spain) This meeting is a strategic event promoted by the Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO) to create a bond between early-stage researchers (PhD candidates or less than 3 years after PhD) and connect them with senior experts in Statistics and Operations Research. The fifth edition of SYSORM follows its four successful previous counterparts that were celebrated in Santiago de Compostela (19-21 June 2024), Elche (21-23 September 2022), El Escorial (5-7 June 2019) and Granada (13-15 November 2017). The scope of SYSORM is to represent and give visibility to the newer generations of talented researchers in Statistics and Operations Research, ranging from methodological to applied research topics, and to foster professional communication between them, both nationally and internationally. The meeting gathers up to 35 contributed talks by young researchers and four plenary talks, given by two top researchers in the fields of Statistics and two top researchers in Operations Research, to contribute to the students’ training. SYSORM will only have a continuous session where all the participants present the work they are developing. If you are a young researcher in Statistics and Operations Research, then you have to be at the 5th SYSORM. This meeting is one of the conferences where you will gain the most, both scientifically and socially!

7th Bringing Young Mathematicians Together (BYMAT): 17-20 November 2025. IMUS (Sevilla, Spain) An international conference aimed at young researchers being a wonderful opportunity to showcase their work and establish new connections for their career. The conference's main target is PhD students, but it's also of utmost interest to master's students and undergraduates who are eager to introduce themselves to mathematical research. There will be parallel sessions in different areas with short talks by the attendees, as well as a poster session. We will also have 4 plenary talks given by young professors and some workshops of general interest. BYMAT is a wonderful opportunity to meet and learn about fellow young researchers and make connections in your research area and beyond. We encourage you to participate actively with a poster or a talk, and of course that you also enjoy Sevilla during your visit.
Besides these exciting conferences, there are several series of mathematical seminars and short courses. Find more information on the IMUS website.
