The EMS is very excited to unveil the first edition of the EMS Magazine, a thorough reimagining of our longstanding journal of record, the EMS Newsletter. The official announcement with details of the changes is on the EMS Press page. The full first issue is now available online, free, here.

Many congratulations to Jean-Michel Bismut (Université Paris-Saclay) and Jeff Cheeger (New York University) who have won the 2021 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences for their remarkable insights that have transformed, and continue to transform, modern geometry.

The Azat Miftakhov Day will be held online on Wednesday June 16 2021 from 4pm CET and will comprise talks by four of the world's top mathematicians. The event is sponsored by the Société Mathématique de France and is in support of Azat Miftakhov, a talented mathematics graduate student from Moscow State University who has been detained by Russian state authorities since February 2019. The 2021 EMS Lecturer Professor Claire Voisin (Collège de France) will speak about "Hyper-Kähler geometry" at 9am (Paris time) on Saturday 29th May 2021.

The EMS is very sad to hear of the death of Professor Doru Ștefănescu, the esteemed algebraist, former Vice-President of the Romanian Mathematical Society, and three time President of the South East European Mathematical Society (MASSEE). EMS Press, the publishing house of the European Mathematical Society, has reached an agreement to assume publication of the renowned Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré C, Analyse Non Linéaire. The journal, owned by the Paris-based Association Publications de l’Institut Henri Poincaré, will cease publication with Elsevier at the end of 2021, and will be published by EMS Press from 1st January 2022.

Nominations are now open for the AMS-EMS Mikhail Gordin Prize for work in probability or dynamical systems, with preference given to early career mathematicians from or professionally connected to an Eastern European country.

The 2021 Abel Prize has been awarded to László Lovász and Avi Wigderson "for their foundational contributions to theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, and their leading role in shaping them into central fields of modern mathematics".
