On July 5, 2025, we lost our dear colleague, Prof. Dr. Zoran Marković (1948–2025), a research professor and long-time director of the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1985–2014).
From the time he joined the Institute in 1972 until his final days, he remained devoted to it, tirelessly working toward its advancement.
As a scientist, he made exceptional contributions to mathematical logic and was one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence in Serbia and the former Yugoslavia. He authored a number of highly regarded scientific papers and monographs.
As the director of the Institute he made immeasurable contributions to the development of Serbian mathematics, establishing new research groups, improving working conditions for researchers, and enhancing the Institute’s facilities.
As a lecturer, he taught at the University of Kragujevac, the University of Belgrade, and, as a visiting professor, at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Davis.
He was central to the international collaboration of the Mathematical Institute of SANU (MISANU), leading Institute’s teams in several HORIZON projects, and playing a key role in cooperation with institutions across Serbia and worldwide.
Throughout his career, he held many important positions in scientific bodies in Serbia. His lasting legacy also includes his dedication to popularizing mathematics and computer science, as well as founding the “May Month of Mathematics” event.
For his contributions, he received the SANU Award for Mathematical Sciences in 2013 and the MISANU Charter in 2021, awarded on the occasion of the Institute’s 75th anniversary.
