Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics

The Executive Committee of the EMS recognizes the wide range of views within the mathematical community regarding the Leiden Declaration, a diversity that has also been reflected in our own discussions. We believe that the Declaration raises a number of important and timely questions concerning the impact of recent developments in artificial intelligence on mathematics and the mathematical sciences.

At the same time, we note that the role of AI in mathematics is evolving rapidly. Its long-term implications for mathematical research, education, communication, and the broader mathematical enterprise are still emerging. While the Declaration appropriately highlights several challenges and potential risks, the Executive Committee considers that the ongoing discussion would also benefit from continued attention to the opportunities that AI may create for our discipline.

In light of these considerations, the Executive Committee has decided not to formally endorse the Declaration. This should not be understood as diminishing the importance of the issues it raises. On the contrary, we regard the Declaration as a valuable contribution to an essential and timely discussion, and we encourage the mathematical community to continue engaging thoughtfully and openly with the opportunities and challenges that AI presents for the future of mathematics.
