EMS Distinguished Lecturer: Volker Mehrmann’s 2026 lectures and nominations for 2027
In 2026, Prof. Volker Mehrmann of TU Berlin will serve as the EMS Distinguished Lecturer, giving lectures as part of this prestigious new EMS title. The Society also invites the mathematical community to begin preparing nominations for the 2027 EMS Distinguished Lecturer.

The EMS Distinguished Lecturer is a prestigious annual appointment of the European Mathematical Society, created to replace the former EMS Lecturer and EMS Distinguished Speaker roles. Each year, the Distinguished Lecturer is invited to give at least one lecture at an international conference in Europe, to deliver further lectures at selected venues across Europe, and to prepare lecture notes for publication in a special series by EMS Press.
For 2026, the first EMS Distinguished Lecturer is Prof. Volker Mehrmann of TU Berlin. As part of the programme, he will deliver the lecture connected with the first of these duties at the Foundations of Computational Mathematics 2026 Conference.
The EMS encourages organisers of conferences, workshops, and other suitable mathematical events in 2026 to consider inviting Prof. Mehrmann for further lectures at venues across Europe. The Distinguished Lecturer scheme is intended to support the dissemination of outstanding mathematics throughout the European mathematical community.
At the same time, it is now time to think about nominations for the EMS Distinguished Lecturer 2027. The Distinguished Lecturer title offers an opportunity to highlight outstanding mathematics and to bring high-level lectures to audiences across the European mathematical community. Further information about the EMS Distinguished Lecturer, including nomination details, is available on the EMS scientific activities page.
