We are recruiting Researchers in the newly-founded Pathogenomics Lab at the Computer Science Department in KSE (Principal Investigator of Bioinformatics: Dr. Eric Bortz). The Pathogenomics Lab is focused on developing leading-edge biotechnology for tracking, characterizing, and controlling emerging infectious diseases of concern in Ukraine and beyond. Taking a data-rich genomics approach, including nanopore sequence and bioinformatics, the Pathogenomics Lab is characterizing anti-microbial resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens, and applying phylogenetics methods to understand emergence of viruses in human and animal populations. The ideal candidate for Research Associate in the Pathogenomics Lab will be a post-baccalaureate level scientist with a background, and work or research experience, in biology, genomics, bioinformatics, bioengineering, or computer science. An advanced degree (Masters or PhD) is preferred; candidates currently pursuing a graduate degree will also be strongly considered. Demonstrated skills in data sciences, coding (R, python3, etc.), data management, or epidemiological analysis, and evidence of scientific publications, are an advantage. Duties include analysis of pathogen genomics sequence data using open-source bioinformatics methods, pathogen genome sequencing using nanopore technology, and data analytics including data visualization, phylogenetics, and data management. The candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team, including masters student interns. Contributions to active research projects impacting public health and veterinary health in Ukraine will be an important aspect of the position.
