EMS Handbook: EMS Structure

2.6 EMS Young Academy

The mathematical community needs to strengthen the role and perspective of the young generation of mathematicians in Europe. They should be supported in their mathematical development and their career perspectives. But they also should be better integrated in the development of the EMS and its decision processes. Knowing better what the young generation needs and where current developments are leading, they should give new impulses for the development of the EMS. For this purpose, EMS has installed an EMS Young Academy (EMYA).

Each EMS corporate member is invited to nominate two early career mathematicians (3rd year PhD students up to 5 years after PhD at point of nomination), respecting gender diversity, and considering the following main criteria, with career stage taken into consideration:

  • track record of academic excellence;
  • commitment to the advancement of the aims of EMYA (see subsection 1.1 of the EMYA By-laws).

The nomination should include a CV and a statement from the candidate to evidence their willingness and commitment to serve on EMYA. The deadline for nominations is July 31st.

The EMS EC will form an EMYA Selection Committee (respecting diversity in terms of gender, mathematical field, and regional balance), chaired by the EC member acting as EMYA liaison. In addition to the chair, the committee will comprise:

  • two representatives among the existing EMYA members, nominated and selected by EMYA, to serve for a period of one year;
  • four external members selected by the EC, to serve for a period of up to two years. Nominations for the Selection Committee can be done by any EMS member, including self-nominations.

By September 30th the Selection Committee will select 20 early career mathematicians from those nominated, to become members of EMYA for the next 4 calendar years. Appropriate attention should be paid to diversity including by gender, geography, and mathematical field.

EMYA organizes itself and suggests developments for the EMS (e.g. research plans, workshops, schools, organizational changes, web presentation, publications, etc.).

At each EMS Council meeting, the EMYA will nominate a representative to the EMS EC for 2 years.

Activities of the EMYA will be supported with a reasonable budget by the EMS. The EMYA representative to the EC should liaise with the EC on this matter.
