2.2.12 Appointment for special committees

The Executive Committee suggests candidates and nominates members for special committees.

  • Abel Prize Committee: four candidates (2 male, 2 female) are suggested in odd numbered years at spring EC meeting upon request of the Abel Board.
  • ECM Scientific Committee is formed at spring EC meeting in years 2 mod 4 (see guidelines in Section 4.2.2).
  • Scientific Committees for special joint meetings, such as EMS-AMS-SMF, EMS-India, EMS Pacific (see guidelines in Section 4.3).
  • EMS Prize Committee is formed at spring EC meeting in years 3 mod 4 (see guidelines and description in Section 5.1).
  • Felix Klein Prize Committee is formed together with ITWM Kaiserslautern at spring EC meeting in years 3 mod 4 (see guidelines and description in Section 5.2).
  • Otto Neugebauer Prize Committee is formed at spring EC meeting in years 3 mod 4 (see guidelines and description in Section 5.3).
  • Lánczos Prize Committee is constituted by CAIR and ECMI in odd years. It consists of 3–6 members; at least one of them is member of CAIR and one is appointed by President of ECMI (see guidelines in Section 5.4).
  • Paul Lévy Prize Organizing Committee and Selection Committee: The Organizing Committee is appointed by the Prize Founding Bodies (EMS, Ecole Polytechnique, Foundation of Ecole Polytechnique, and Paul Lévy’s family) and the Principal Sponsor (BNP Paribas) (see guidelines and description in Section 5.5).
  • Hirzebruch Lecture Committee is constituted jointly with German Mathematical Society (DMV) at spring EC meeting in years 3 mod 4; 2–3 members represent EMS (see guidelines and description in Section 5.6).
  • Gordin Prize Selection Committee is constituted jointly with AMS in years 0 mod 4. It consists of 2 members representing AMS and 2 members representing EMS. The members can be reappointed (see guidelines and description in Section 5.7).
  • Abel Lecturer at ECM is selected from previous Abel Prize winners at spring EC meeting in years 3 mod 4, after consultation with the Abel Committee.
  • Scientific Committee for Caucasian Mathematics Conference is constituted in years 3 mod 4. The committee consists of the invited speakers of the previous years. In case of a need of change, the EC decides on the replacement.
  • Steering Committee and Scientific Advisory Committee for Balkan Mathematics Conference, which is held in odd years in one of the Balkan countries. The Steering Committee consists of the EMS President, the EMS Past President, the Chair of the EMS Committee for European Solidarity, and one member from the Balkan countries chosen by the EMS EC. The Scientific Advisory Committee consists of the invited speakers of the previous BMC and it is chaired by the EMS Past President.
  • Fermat Prize Jury: The EC nominates a member in odd years.
  • Scientific Steering Committee of the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge: The EC suggests new members upon request of the Director of the Institute.
  • Programme Committee for ICM: The EC proposes members of the Programme Committee for the ICM upon request of the IMU Secretary; usually at the spring EC meetings 3 years before the ICM.
  • Scientific Programme Committee of ICIAM: The EC proposes members of the Scientific Programme Committee for the ICIAM upon request of the ICIAM President; usually 4 years before the ICIAM.
  • EMS-UMALCA (EMS supports one European speaker at the Latin American Congress of Mathematics, once in four years (last one was in 2016)).
  • EMS-BS lecture: The EC, in cooperation with the Bernoulli Society, appoints the EMS-BS lecturer. EMS selects the venue/event for the EMS-BS lecture and covers the travel expenses of the EMS-BS lecturer in even years, BS in odd years.
