Anti-Harassment Statement

The Anti-Harassment Statement has been approved by the EMS Executive Committee on 16 November 2024 as part of the Code of Ethics of the European Mathematical Society.

The European Mathematical Society (EMS) has at its core an ethos of respect, as set out in the Code of Ethics of the EMS. The EMS does not tolerate harassment of any kind.

Harassment is belittling or threatening behaviour. It may be linked to academic career stage, age, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, nationality, physical appearance, religion, sex, or sexual orientation, or any other characteristic.

Harassment creates an uncomfortable and threatening environment, not conducive to the free and relaxed exchange of scientific ideas, and violates the principles set out in our Code of Ethics.

Examples of harassment include:

  • degrading or offensive language
  • displays of inappropriate objects or pictures
  • inappropriate jokes or comments
  • inappropriate touching
  • sustained interruption during presentations
  • unwanted recording or photography
  • unwelcome advances or stalking

It should be borne in mind that whether words or actions are perceived as offensive or not can differ from person to person.

Everyone is responsible for ensuring a welcoming and positive environment in which harassment has no place, and should call out offensive behaviour when it occurs.
