PhD position in Mathematical modelling of biofilms
University of Nottingham / Adelaide University | Nottingham, UK & Adelaide, Australia
Classification: Mathematics in Science and Technology
Topic: Mathematical modelling of thin viscous flows with biological surfactants. Details: Surfactants are substances that decrease the surface tension at a liquid interface, enabling the fluid to wet and spread more easily. An emerging field of research is to harness surfactants in biological applications. For example, in wound healing biological surfactants can dislodge biofilms and aid wound cleaning, leading to improved wound care. The project will explore mathematical models for biological surfactants using a combination of continuum mechanics, asymptotic analysis, and numerical computation. The project is eligible for a Nottingham–Adelaide Joint PhD Studentship which includes stipend, Home UK fees, training and travel support. The successful PhD candidate will be expected to spend at least one year at the University of Adelaide (Australia), where the two co-supervisors are based. Expected start date: 1 April 2026.
